Sustainability and Climate

At Aycliffe Drive Primary School, we are committed to fostering a sustainable future through comprehensive environmental protection embedded within our school culture, curriculum, and operations. In alignment with the Department for Education’s Climate Change and Sustainability Strategy, we are creating a comprehensive whole-school Sustainability Plan that embodies the key areas: climate education, decarbonisation, reduction of waste, nature and biodiversity, as well as leadership and governance. Our plan focuses on each of the areas in bold:
  1. Cleaner Air: We actively promote initiatives that contribute to cleaner air in and around our school environment by encouraging walking, cycling, and the use of low-emission transport options for pupils and staff.
  2. Reduction in Water Usage: We aim to implement water-saving practises across the school site, including the installation of recycling methods in line with health and safety, and promoting water conservation awareness among pupils and staff.
  3. Energy Emissions: We are dedicated to reducing our energy emissions by utilising energy-efficient technologies, monitoring our energy consumption, and exploring renewable energy opportunities to minimise our carbon footprint.
  4. Recycling and Waste: Our school continues to explore methods for a robust recycling and waste management programme, aiming to reduce landfill waste by encouraging recycling, composting organic waste, and raising pupil awareness about responsible consumption.
  5. Enhancing Nature: We actively enhance biodiversity on our grounds through planting native species, creating wildlife habitats, and maintaining green spaces that support local ecosystems and provide outdoor learning environments.
  6. Use of Forest School: We integrate Forest School principles into our curriculum, offering pupils regular opportunities to engage with nature, develop practical environmental skills, and foster a deep connection with the natural world.
  7. Curriculum Coverage for Sustainability: Sustainability is embedded across our curriculum, ensuring pupils gain a thorough understanding of environmental issues, climate change, and sustainable development through science, geography, citizenship, and cross-curricular projects.
  8. Knowledge about Climate Change: We prioritise climate education to empower pupils with knowledge about the causes, impacts, and solutions to climate change, preparing them to be informed global citizens who can contribute positively to their communities and the planet.
  9. Governors’ Involvement: Our governing body plays a vital role in overseeing and supporting the school’s sustainability agenda. Governors regularly review progress, allocate resources, and ensure sustainability is a strategic priority aligned with our school’s vision and values.

Through these commitments, Aycliffe Drive Primary School strives to lead by example, embedding sustainability into every aspect of school life to inspire our pupils and community towards a greener, healthier future.
